«Les Vins d’Alexandre», an interview with owner Alexandre Gerbe

In the heart of the 11th arrondissement, close to Place de la République and Hotel Mareuil, the is a little wine cellar and shop that is full of surprises. At «Les Vins d’Alexandre», you will find excellent organic wines and olive oils, honey, charcuterie, and other delicious local products. To find out more about the origins of these high quality foods, we met with owner Alexandre Gerbe.


Hotel Mareuil: Where does your passion for wine come from?
Alexandre Gerbe
: I discovered my passion for wine by participating in auctions. I decided to make it my profession and received a Diplôme National d’œnologie (National Diploma of Oenology) from the Montpellier Pharmacy Faculty. I then started doing international business in wines and spirits. I am now both oenologist and olive grower.  I own about 10 hectares of olive trees in the Baux de Provence region, and I produce my own olive oil.

Hotel Mareuil: When and in which context did you open your «cave»?
: After working as a wine buyer, I opened my boutique in 1998 in the 7th arrondissement in Paris. It was called «Les Vins du Terroir». I sold it in 2005 and set up a new shop here in 2011, after a little detour through Avignon in the meantime, with «La Cave des Olyviers».


Hotel Mareuil: What are your specialty products?
My clients are especially appreciative of my Languedoc wines.  As for olive oil, I offer two kinds, both of which are very successful. As an accompaniment to peppered tomatoes, the AOC oil is softer and goes for 26,50€/L. I produce a more spicy one for 23€/L, which goes perfectly well with pasta or fish dishes. This second kind is not called AOC (Appellation d’Origine Certifiée) because, even though it is produced from trees cultivated in the Baux de Provence region, it comes from trees of varied origins, such as Greece, Catalonia, or different Italian regions. The charcuterie section of the boutique is also very popular.

Hotel Mareuil: When can clients taste your products?
I organize tastings every Thursday evening from 8pm to 11pm. The cost is 35€. This allows customers to try 6 excellent wines (priced from 20€  to 100€ a bottle), served with charcuterie and cheese.  We talk, we laugh, we share, it is very friendly.

Open daily from 10am to 2pm, and 4pm to 10 pm.
