«Les Vins d’Alexandre», an interview with owner Alexandre Gerbe

In the heart of the 11th arrondissement, close to Place de la République and Hotel Mareuil, the is a little wine cellar and shop that is full of surprises. At «Les Vins d’Alexandre», you will find excellent organic wines and olive oils, honey, charcuterie, and other delicious local products. To find out more about the origins of these high quality foods, we met with owner Alexandre Gerbe.

Hotel Mareuil: Where does your passion for wine come from?
Alexandre Gerbe
: I discovered my passion for wine by participating in auctions. I decided to make it my profession and received a Diplôme National d’œnologie (National Diploma of Oenology) from the Montpellier Pharmacy Faculty. I then started doing international business in wines and spirits. I am now both oenologist and olive grower.  I own about 10 hectares of olive trees in the Baux de Provence region, and I produce my own olive oil.

Hotel Mareuil: When and in which context did you open your «cave»?
: After working as a wine buyer, I opened my boutique in 1998 in the 7th arrondissement in Paris. It was called «Les Vins du Terroir». I sold it in 2005 and set up a new shop here in 2011, after a little detour through Avignon in the meantime, with «La Cave des Olyviers».

Hotel Mareuil: What are your specialty products?
My clients are especially appreciative of my Languedoc wines.  As for olive oil, I offer two kinds, both of which are very successful. As an accompaniment to peppered tomatoes, the AOC oil is softer and goes for 26,50€/L. I produce a more spicy one for 23€/L, which goes perfectly well with pasta or fish dishes. This second kind is not called AOC (Appellation d’Origine Certifiée) because, even though it is produced from trees cultivated in the Baux de Provence region, it comes from trees of varied origins, such as Greece, Catalonia, or different Italian regions. The charcuterie section of the boutique is also very popular.

Hotel Mareuil: When can clients taste your products?
I organize tastings every Thursday evening from 8pm to 11pm. The cost is 35€. This allows customers to try 6 excellent wines (priced from 20€  to 100€ a bottle), served with charcuterie and cheese.  We talk, we laugh, we share, it is very friendly.

Open daily from 10am to 2pm, and 4pm to 10 pm.

Be inspired at the bakery «Du Pain et des Idées» (bread and ideas)!

This traditional bakery located between Place de la République and Canal St. Martin and owned by Christophe Vasseur, a bread lover from a young age, you will find all sorts of breads, even products you may not have known existed! Steps from Hotel Mareuil, this lovely boutique is well worth a visit.

The pleasure of savoring high quality bread…
Voted best baker in Paris in 2008 (meilleur boulanger de Paris), this young artisan has made a name for himself in the city of Paris, thanks to personalized and unique breads, baked traditionally with great technique and love. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, it is the result of the perfect baking of Du Pain et des Idées, and the recipe of its success. Indeed, thanks to word of mouth, this little business has many faithful clients, not only in the neighborhood, but also people who come daily from every corner of the capital city! The specialty? Le Pain des Amis (the bread of friends), a big rectangular loaf to share in good company.

A plethora of choices!
Du Pain et des Idées is not just about the traditional baguette that accompanies your meal, you will also find multiple sorts of stuffed breads you can enjoy at any time of the day. Not to mention all the pastries and rolls that you will just have to try for dessert or an afternoon snack. Try for instance the chausson aux pommes (apple turnover)… filled with real pieces of apple instead of the usual applesauce, just delicious! Or go for the unusual croissants with eau de rose (rose water) or Matcha tea, the snails and their many flavors, among which our favorite: lemon and Montélimar nougat!

Open Monday through Friday from 6:45am to 8pm.

Rediscover Hôtel du Nord, a place full of history!

You will find this mythical place, made famous on the big screen, on the shore of Canal Saint Martin. You have guessed, it is the famous Hôtel du Nord!

A movie feel
We all know the 1938 cult film by Marcel Carné. Inspired by Eugène Dabit’s novel, the hotel was presented as modest and with a typical «titi parisien» atmosphere. In the 70’s, after the international success of the film, it was made into an actual hotel, much to the pleasure of fans everywhere. Revamped in 1993, the hotel becomes a great success.

A little known restaurant
Today, only a bar and restaurant, it honors the historical Paris with its 1930’s style. On the menu, original dishes with exotic accents will tempt your tatebuds, such as the Millefeuille with raw tuna in the Japanese style, or the goat cheese ravioli with basil, walnuts and roquette lettuce.  You will also find typical French dishes: Assiette de Charcuterie (deli-platter) (dry sausage from Ardèche, ham from Bayonne, and traditional «Prince de Paris» cooked ham), rib steak, half-cooked foie gras and more. For you vegeterians out there, the restaurant at Hôtel du Nord has a Veggie Burger for 19€.  And if, like us at Hotel Mareuil, you have a bit of a sweet tooth, you will surely order French toast with salted butter caramel or carrot cake.

The restaurant is open for lunch from noon to 2:30pm, Saturday until 3pm and 4pm to Sunday. The evening is open from 7:30pm to 11pm.

La Pharmacie

If you love wine and good food, then take time and stop by La Pharmacie, a cozy restaurant located rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, just minutes from Hotel Mareuil. Behind its sky blue window, which gives a peppy colorful touch to the 11th quarter, an old Parisian pharmacy has been turned into a comfortable wine bistrot. You will enjoy the decor (parquet, cushy leather armchairs, red tones on the walls), as well as the tasty French cuisine. The wine menu in itself is worth going to La Pharmacie. If you are unsure, do not hesitate to ask the staff for advice, they will be sure to help you make the right menu choices!

Open for lunch and dinner, 7 days a week.
About 30€ to 40€ for a full meal (appetizer, main course and dessert).

Winter sales in Paris, it’s now!

The holidays are just behind us, and it is time to take your credit card out again! At Hotel Mareuil, we like to forget about the crisis and the return of the cold weather with a bit of shopping. The time has come to take advantage of the winter sales in one of the best quarters in Paris as far as fashion is concerned: the Marais quarter!

La jolie garde robe

The fief of fashion designers
Among our favorite boutiques, we enjoy the Scandinavian style of Plagg, located rue Charlot, or the British chic of El Ganso, on rue des Rosiers. If you like vintage, the Marais has many boutiques for you. Impossible to resist the little retro dress, or the thick knit sweater with graphic motifs for you men! We recommend two charming places: La Jolie Garde Robe, on rue Commines, for 60’s style garments, and Rosemary’s Baby (ex Noir Kennedy), on rue de Turenne, for clothing and rock accessories.

Eclectic programs at the Nouveau Casino

Steps away from Hotel Mareuil, Le Nouveau Casino is one of Paris’ most sought after concert venues. We love its industrial decoration, 100% raw, with its walls covered in triangular steel sheet, lamps that resemble those of surgical rooms, and its two huge 19th century chandeliers. At night, the space becomes a club devoted to rock, hip hop, and electronic music. Worth discovering with friends or your special loved one.

Pink Flamingo: the pizza place that rocks the Canal

Between Gare de l’Est and place de la République, the Girly Pink Flamingo pizza place attracts customers looking for authentic flavors. Why? Because of their unusual pizzas, with dough prepared from organic flour, extra virgin olive oil, and Guérande salt, and also thanks to the unique recipes served under fun names. You might try a «Bjork», with slices of smoked salmon and delicate lumpfish roe on sour cream (13,50€), or perhaps a «Ho Chi Minh», with chicken and gambas in green curry sauce, coconut milk, citronella, fresh coriander and grilled peanuts (16€). This Italian style gastronomy will delight your taste buds!

Open for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday, and every evening from 7:00pm to 11:30 pm.
