At Hotel Mareuil, we simply love French electronic music, and we are conveniently located near one of the best spots for live concerts. From now and until March 31, 2013, the Museum of Arts décoratifs welcomes an exhibit dedicated to the French Touch. The term, created by DJ Laurent Garnier, refers to the young French scene from the 90’s, from which came electro music, associated with the graphic and esthetic aspects of video. Air, Cassius, or les Daft Punk, to name a few, have played an important part in this movement, and are now world renowned. The exhibit shows works of graphic designers like Hotspot, Alex Courtès or La Shampouineuse.

Paris, capital of creativity? The City of Lights is well known for its fashion boutiques, and is also intimately linked to art. Proof of this lies in the numerous galleries flourishing all around the Marais quarter and the vintage fashion designers of the 11th arrondissement who create new with old. At hotel Mareuil what we also love above all else is pottery and ceramics. We were delighted to have discovered the workshop Rêver la Terre on our very own street. We can’t wait to tell you about it.
A playfully creative workshop
From children to teenagers and adults, this pottery and ceramics workshop welcomes beginners and experienced potters alike in intimate groups of 6 to 10 people. Here you will discover how to work clay (for earthenware or raku), from modeling to coiling, from throwing to slabbing. Little ones will will learn the art of decorating with a paint brush. This is a truly enriching and creative experience. A wonderful family activity!
Good to know: Twice a month, the workshop organizes outdoor sessions on the banks of the river Seine. Equipment and supplies are always provided.
Adults (16 and up): Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.
140€ for 4 three-hour sessions, thus 12 hours of workshop time, supplies equipment and baking included.
Children (6 to 16 years): Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:30 pm and 4:30 to 6:00 pm and Friday from 5:00 to 6:30 pm.

Just a few steps from Hotel Mareuil, at the heart of the most vibrant quarter in Paris, you will find one of our favorite concert venues : Le Nouveau Casino. Naturally Parisian with its improbable decor of 19th century chandeliers and huge surgery room-style lamps, it attracts night time lovers of electronic music, rock and rap. Concert venue by day, this espace becomes a groovy club at night, in a sophisticated yet friendly atmosphere. There you will hear such artists as Baden Baden, Velvet, or Mr. Scruff.

At Hotel Mareuil, we are true art lovers. We have just set a few works of graphic, optical and kinetic art on one of our floors, including 2 by legendary artist Victor Vasarely. When we heard about the Vasarely exhibit for children, held at the Musée en Herbe, we thought you ought to know about it!
The work of Vasarely explained to children
Through a treasure hunt, children from 5 to 12 are led from one piece of art to the next, in order to better understand the work of the father of Op Art. The French painter successfully gives an impression of movement through the use of geometrical shapes. From his famous zebras with ondulating stripes to his chromatic alphabet, children are invited to enter the black and white universe and the dream world of the artist. Through playful activities (zebras seemingly coming to life, works to put back together, etc…), children are able to enter Vasarely’s phantasmagoric world. They will love it.
The «Vasarely vous a à l’œil» exhibit, from March 16 to December 31, 2012.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, at night until 9:00 pm on Thursdays.
Treasure hunt for children 5-12 and their family: Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 am , noon, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 pm (every day during school vacations).
Duration: 1 hour.
10€ per child / 6€ per adult.

Sometimes, behind the door of a craftsman, one can discover hidden treasures… It certainly is true in the boutique/workshop of jeweler/bijoutier Yves Gratas, in the Oberkampf quarter. A true artist, he sculpts and practically brings to life precious jewels, with a touch of modernity. He is amazingly skilled with gold and stones. Cut in unusual ways, set upside down or in different colors, stones are superbly transformed with unexpected alchemy and elegance. At Hotel Mareuil, we find them irresistable. Let the precious jewels charm you, you will not regret it!
We like: Fashion designer Vanessa Bruno is one of his famous clients, understandably so!
Open Mondays by appointment, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Looking to fill your children with wonder? Then take them to the new exhibit at Jardin des Plantes, «Dinosaures, la vie en grand» (dinosaur, life in big). You cannot deny it, dinosaurs are a wonder for both children and adults. Until May 13, 2013, you are invited to learn about the life of the biggest dinosaur of all times: the Sauropod. 40 meters long, and weighing up to 90 tons, as high as 4 buses, this herbivore was not very well known until recently. Today, thanks to years of research, questions about its way of life can finally be answered. How did it find enough food to fill its 100 000-calorie diet? How big was its heart? How did its muscles support its weight? You will know everything about the sauropod!

A breathtaking reenactment
The exhibit is perfectly designed. Your little ones will be amazed from the very start, when they are greeted by a lifesize model of the head and long neck of the Sauropod, surrounded by luxurious vegetation. Thanks to dimmed lighting, they will be very impressed when they meet the 5-meter tall model of the hind leg of Supersaurus, among other specimens. They will also be able to take part in a miniature prehistoric dig site. Who knows, it may inspire new vocations!
The «Dinosaure, la vie en grand» exhibit at Jardin des Plantes, from October 23, 2012, to May 13, 2013.
Open every day (except May 1st) from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
